Reviews and mix online

Hi all,

Some new ones doing the biz:

Quizz - Are you sure EP - Dialect

I have to admit: I do not own a single Duriez record. His sound has
always been a little, well, inconsequential to my ears. Yeah I'll
probably be subject to some small amount of incredulity, but I can wear
it. But while I'll always choose Granny Smiths over Golden Delicious,
there is a steadily increasing amount of French produce I just can't
ignore, and here's one example. A follow up to Quizz and Terry's superb
'Decibel Magic' release a little way back, the former goes it alone
with a four tracker showcasing more avant acid house. Cheerfully
throwing the rulebook out the window, Quizz lays down four tracks of
sleazy electronic swagger, marrying surgically-sharp beats with
ridiculous grimy bass squelches and frankly bonkers vocal meanderings.
Standout track 'First come first served' is a rinsingly-syncopated
electronic workout that simply doesn't mess, while 'Controversy' is a
heaving, sex-drenched acid funk number that spirals off into deeper
more introspective territory mid-way...with tunes like this, it could
well be 1789 all over again...

V/A - Colour series: Blue - Freerange

If ever I was handing out knighthoods for services to house music (it
could happen!!), then Jamie Odell would be near the top of my list.
Here he takes the exclusive tracks from the forthcoming Freerange
compilation CD and slaps them onto a lovely four-tracker for the vinyl
heads. That makes me very happy. Quality is assured, and duly
delivered: Jimpster himself provides a groovesome dub of Random
Factor's 'Move On' to open, followed by Kirk Degiorgio's stunning
'Cosmic Peasant'. Falling into a sumptuous niche somewhere between
broken beat, deep house and techno, this really is something quite
special from the old master. Just wait for those chords at the
end...beautiful. The flip opens with King Kooba's wickedly funky 'San
Salvador', a pimpin', chugging, dangerously infdectious throwdown,
before we finish up with Sold on Sound's 'Fresh Air', which smoothes
things out even further via lush instrumentation and a warm, inviting
deep house groove. Highly recommended.

NYC2 - untitled - NYC2

An intriguingly enigmatic release that features two superb, and very
different, takes on house music. The A is an exquisitely melancholy
slice of deepness, steeped in Detroit lore. The flip is an almost
self-consciously old-school rhythmic workout underpinned by a pulsing
synth and featuring some real hands-in-the-air strings, 1989 warehouse
style. I honestly can't tell if this is an old or new production - not
that I'm bothered, because this is worth owning whatever.

Also, I've got a recent mix online courtesy of Dub Kult, erstwhile
producer, film-maker, DJ and generally talented guy! According to the
man himself his next release on Raum will feature a remix by Guido
Schneider. Truly one to watch.

All the best,
